What Leadership Is

When considering leadership, one might first think of it as a position, title, role, skill, personality trait, responsibility, office, art, or behavior. Each perspective offers a unique view of what leadership entails and how it manifests in different contexts.

Definitions of Leadership

Leadership can be defined in various ways:

The New Oxford Dictionary of English defines it as "the action of leading a group of people or an organization" and "the state or position of being a leader" (NODE, 2001).

Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes it as "the office or position of a leader, the capacity to lead, and the act or instance of leading" (Merriam-Webster, 2007).

Dwight D. Eisenhower describes leadership as "the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it" (1988).

Bass (1990) views leadership as "an interaction between two or more members of a group that often involves a structuring or restructuring of the situation and the perceptions and expectations of members" (p.19).

Gardner (1990) sees it as "the process of persuasion or example by which an individual (or leadership team) induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader and his or her followers" (p.1).

The Essence of Leadership

At its core, leadership is about guiding a group towards a specific destination or goal. It involves having a clear vision of where you want to go or where you want a group or organization to go, understanding how to get there, and devising a plan to achieve that vision. Effective leadership requires communicating this plan clearly and taking the necessary actions while influencing, motivating, directing, and guiding others to reach the desired outcome.

Key Elements of Leadership

1. Vision: Leadership starts with having a clear destination or goal in mind, a vision of what you want to achieve or where you want to lead others.

2. Knowledge and Planning: Knowing how to reach that destination involves having the necessary knowledge and developing a strategic plan to follow.

3. Communication: Effective leaders must communicate their vision and plans clearly to ensure everyone understands and aligns with the goal.

4. Action: Implementing the plan requires taking decisive actions and ensuring that these actions are executed effectively.

5. Influence: A leader’s role involves influencing, motivating, directing, and guiding others to work towards the goal.

John C. Maxwell’s Leadership Philosophy

John C. Maxwell encapsulates leadership with the phrase “knowing the way, going the way, and showing the way”:

Knowing the Way: This means having a clear vision of where you want to be or where you want to guide others.

Going the Way: It involves living out the vision and taking the necessary steps to achieve it, rather than merely conceptualizing it.

Showing the Way: A leader must ensure that others can follow and achieve the vision as well. This includes building, leading, training, and supporting a team effectively.

The Role of a Leader

John Kotter succinctly describes a leader’s role: “A leader defines what the future should look like, aligns people with that vision, and inspires them to make it happen, despite the obstacles.” A good leader creates an inspiring vision of the future, influences and engages others to embrace that vision, manages its delivery, and builds an effective team to achieve the vision.

Leadership is ultimately about translating vision into reality. Leaders set direction, inspire others to share their vision, and employ managerial skills to guide and motivate others towards the intended outcome. Rather than using force, effective leaders inspire and encourage others to work towards achieving shared goals.

Conclusion

In summary, leadership is not merely a position or title but a dynamic process involving vision, strategy, communication, action, and influence. A true leader inspires and guides others to achieve a common goal, turning vision into reality through effective leadership practices.
